Romans: recognized importance of fresh water + public hygiene (public baths, toilets, sewers) Hebrews: dietary laws; how to safely eat meat of slaughtered animals. Christian period: nursing was seen as the act of loving and caring & was taken on by women. There were devastating epidemics: smallpox, diphtheria, cholera, scarlet fever. 1st laywoman in new france to provide nursing care was marie rollet. Nuns came to new france to care for sick + educate (battled smallpox. 1st nurses to tend to the sick= male attendants & jesuit priests (missionary immigrants to new france also wanted to convert aboriginals to christian)
