Social constructionism: actions, behaviours, and traits that are masculine and feminine that are learned. From society, family, the media, etc. o: we learned to be male or female o. Includes stereotypes (females are emotional, males are tough) Normative gender representations are now often challenged. A particular type of masculinity that is oriented towards strength, power, dominance. Cultural hegemony cultural power maintained through ideas, insitutions, and relations. Power that is idealized presented at optimum and preferred. Power that is naturalized presented as coming directly from the natural order . Features: aggressiveness, courage, strength self-control, emotional reserve, rationality, independence, sexual potency, etc. Does not consist of: passivity, timidity, fragility, expressiveness, emotionality, needfulness, dependence, humuility, innocence, etc. o. Problem: not necessarily with showing sexual content, but the problem is the diversity of images of women. Narrator had a narrow lens for his selection of videos. Women using sexuality in relation to empowerment: beyonce.
