Document Summary

Characterized by underground artists, but that received mainstream recognition. Subgenre: grunge and post grunge, industrial rock, madhester scene, britpop and psot -britpop, stoner tock. Stripped down style, garage band as point of departure- distorted, gritty guitar sound, lots of feedback. The gritty guitar, dirty feel of the quality sets grunge apart from other stripped down style bands. Stripped down effects- few instruments, and not a huge emphasis on very virtuosi guitar solos. Power and distortion from heavy metal (black sabbath) Generation x values (term of douglas coupland: foncern for future, lack of power) Ex: soundgarden, nrivana, alice in chains, pearl jam. Simple guitar solo, picks up into the melody. Not aiming for high quality vocal that might not be able to reproduce if you are drunk, etc. Interesting fact: backup vocals has blues influence (not seen across the grenre tho) Vocals: moments that are very clear but then falls down.
