Romanticism and program music tuesday november 17th, 2015. Beethoven symphony #6 - the pastoral symphony: in 5 movements, an expression of feelings rather than a descriptive painting, each movement has its own descriptive title. I: an awakening of cheerful feelings upon arrival of the countryside. Iii: merry gathering of country folk, iv: thunder storm, v: shepherd"s song; o o o cheerful and thankful feelings after the storm: this framework becomes the made for other program symphonies. + consequent in 4 bars: 4 soloists- sop, alto, ten, bass as well as a full choir, combines instrumental and vocal contexts in a non-operatic setting/style but in symphonic form with longer, grander, more impressive movements. Romantic ideals change the listening experience: most major change is the adoption of a serious tone in the concert hall, audience is emotionally engaged, expectations of silence and formal dress. Romantic era: unification of germany and italy.
