He identifies distance as a characteristic of tourism. Mathieson & wall : tourism is understood to be the temporal movement of people outside of their places of work and residence. Emphasis on movement, not movement (traveling outside of where you work and live). Butler argues that tourism is a part of leisure and a part of recreation. He argues that tourism is an important part of leisure studies.
