Macro social/historical factors promoting language contact conquest, colonization (eng, fr, span, portuguese) & immigration. Lin factors that favor contact induced change: structural similarity. More similar = more likely to have convergence convergence = achievement of structural similarity btw langs not necessarily lang structure borrowed but an increase in the use of parallel structures.
