Linguistics is the scientific study of human language (languages). Like any complex phenomenon, language can be studied in various ways, at various levels of abstraction, and from various different perspectives. The study of how people manipulate sounds. The study of the role of context in meaning. All of these research areas investigate linguistic competence: what you know when you know a language. All of these investigate how linguistic knowledge is used by a speaker or a speech community, rather than the underlying knowledge itself. Langue (abstract, systematic rules and conventions of a system; independent of, and pre- exists, individual users) Parole (concrete instances of the use of langue) An idealized capacity located as a psychological or mental property or function. Doing something with the language the production of actual utterances. Mental system of the rules of a language. A grammar is a system that combines small pieces of language into large ones.
