Semantics is the subfield of linguistics that studies linguistic meaning and how expressions convey meaning. Lexical semantics: deals with the meaning of words and other lexical expressions. Compositional semantics : deals with phrasal meaning and how they are assembled. Pragmatics is the subfield of linguistics that studies the ways people use language in actual conversation. Linguistic meaning : bachelor means unmarried adult male (does it?) When we come to talk about the meaning of sentences, linguistic meaning is often called sentence meaning : The dog bit the mean means that here is ome biting event which took place before the time of speaking, where the biter was a contextually identifiable dog and the biter was a contextually identifiable man. Linguistic meaning is separate from speaker meaning: The lexical items themselves leave the question open. However, b can use that utterance to mean yes or no, depending on context. Linguistic meaning is not obvious type of container.
