Document Summary
Attitudes towards martyrdom: clement of alexandria ( rst to second century ad) Martyrs who died readily gave up their lives. They were heroic because they avoided denying their faith. To get yourself killed was a moral good. Approach death with thankfulness, as god made you pre-destined for martyrdom, as he gave you the opportunity for death. A martyr was considered a hero and sacred. Martyrdom was perfectionism, exhibited a perfect love for their faith. They would then begin to understand reality and the absolute truth. Death was something individuals should strive for, they were role models: ignatius of antioch ( rst to second century ad) Killed by wild beasts, plead with christians not to interfere with his death. As he lay dying, he died willing for god"s sake. I am god"s wheat, and i am ground by the teeth of god"s beasts so i can become the pure bread of christ.
