Sex difference baby boys tend to be heavier than females: week 22+ males heavier; ~150g difference at birth, males relatively higher average birth weight. Applications low birthweight (lbw) leading indicator of poor health among infants. Lbw may delay brain and somatic development and affect a wide range of subsequent outcomes later in life. Race difference black neonates were consistently shorter and had lower birth weights than hispanic and white neonates. Inrauterine growth restriction (iugr) associated with increased risk of later onset: hypertension, diabetes, obesity, dyslipidemia, metabolic syndrome. Apgar performed on a baby at 1 and 5 min post-birth: 1 min score determines how well the baby tolerated with birthing process; 5 min score provides indication of baby status outside womb. Factors that influence apgar score: maternal sedation or anesthesia, congenital malformations, gestational age, trauma, interobserver variability (i. e skin colour of baby)
