Poverty in canada has been steadily increasing since mid 1990s. Definition of lico changes from year to year. Low income measure used for international comparisons calculated at 50% of the median income (people who are worse off from the average family) Basket of measure goes beyond basic needs, you could include dental care. Poverty relief- addressing people immediate survival needs in crisis or immediate problem. Does not help people secure their livelihood only helping them to live so that they survive. Does not end the ongoing cycle of poverty. Relief activities are critical for the short term survival of extremely poor individuals. Focus on the root cause of poverty and looking at why it exist, looks at long- term. Should be carried out in a manner of promotion of sustainability, self reliance, avoid overdependence. Helping to build people capacities, increase productiveness, engage more in decision making. The challenge arises from transferring from short term to long term.
