In early adulthood, mental health disorders (especially depression) are the most common cause of years lived with disability (ylds). In middle adulthood, musculoskeletal disorders (mostly lower back pain) are the most common cause of ylds. In older adulthood, sense organ disorders (primarily hearing loss) become prominent. Addressing these issues requires increased access to and utilization of health services, including counseling for mental health conditions, medications for pain management, and assistive devices such as hearing aids. Mental health and musculoskeletal disorders contribute the largest proportion of years lived with disability (ylds) among younger adults. The most cost-efficient way to improve the health status of future older adults is for today"s young adults to take steps to prevent or delay the onset of ncds. Many older adults live active and independent lives, but most will at some point develop a chronic condition that may limit their independence.
