Researcher strictly follows the text to analyze its development from beginning to end. Researcher refrains from using later parts of the text to understand earlier parts. Aim: reconstructing the structure of the text and the case, to understand how meaning is built up throughout the text. Most consistently applied in: objective hermeneutics and conversation analysis. Coding does not play a role here. The core activity of qualitative data analysis for understanding or explaining what is in the data! Coding is a preparatory step to make data ready for interpretation. To interpret something, means to understand the internal logic of an excerpt of the data. Challenge at the heart of qualitative research: without it we can"t make sense of our data! How do you choose: check compatibility with rest of your study, look at the method of analysis itself, look at how you collected your data.
