HSS 2342 Lecture 17: Lecture 6 Chapter 6 Part 2
Document Summary
Lecture 6 chapter 6 protein: amino acids: hormones, most made of protein, messenger molecules, released in response to stimuli, travel in bloodstream to tissues, elicit appropriate responses, e. g. , insulin. Protein turnover: continually making and breaking down proteins, we do(cid:374)"t store protei(cid:374) like fat or glu(cid:272)ose! All of it is i(cid:374) use if its i(cid:374) the (cid:271)ody: amino acid pool, remains constant, or stripped of nitrogen and carbon backbone is used to make other proteins or energy (or even stored as fat) Nitrogen (n) balance: nitrogen equilibrium (zero nitrogen balance), n in = n out, when growing: positive nitrogen balance (need to consume more n: n in > n out ) ie. retaining protein to build tissues. Ill or injured: negative nitrogen: n in < n out (ie. losing more protein than you are taking in or consuming) Using amino acids to make: other compounds, e. g. , neurotransmitters, energy and glucose, fat requires lots of energy and does not happen often.
