Mdg background: in september 2000, representatives of 189 countries (and 147 heads of state) met in new. History of the mdgs: in 2000, the millennium declaration was adopted but did not contain the mdgs in their present form. They were expressions of how we thought the world should be: the millennium development goals were a success. 1. 2 billion still live in extreme poverty, even though poverty rates have been halved between 1990 and 2010 and the mdg target has been met. Ie. people living on less than . 25 dropped from 47% in 1990 to 14% in 2015: achieve universal primary education. Despite impressive strides forward at the start of the decade, progress in reducing the number of children out of school has slackened considerably. Ie. the global out-of-school children of primary school age dropped from 1000 million in. 2000 to 57 million in 2015: promote gender equality and empower women.
