HSS 2305 Lecture Notes - Lecture 5: Ultimate Tensile Strength, Fibroblast, Collagen
Document Summary
Stratified level and dermis are separated by basement membrane. Both layers interact with each other and the basement membrane. Extracellular matrix: anything that sits outside of the cell. Cell communicates with it through integral proteins that are on the membrane. Glycocalyx: carbohydrate projections that are on the outside of the membrane, cells look for the sugar groups to communicate with each other. Can also act as a protective barrier/ buffer against pathogens. Act as a net for growth factors and bring them into the cell. Ecm= highly organized network of materials; offers physical support and signaling. Ecm will dictate the function of the cell. Ex mammary glands without proteins, flat and nothing happens; with proteins on the plate, the cells secrete the milk proteins. Cells that need a basement membrane= epithelial cells, cells that are lining a lumen that has exposure to the outside and require information on where the lumen and the outside world is.
