Disease is a collection of symptoms and clinical finding assembled for the convenience of medical profession and the patient. Disease is a state of being under the given conditions: May result from exposure to specific harmful agents. Agents of disease: biological, chemical, physical. Changing environment conditions: climate change, environmental pollution. Illness exists independent of the disease and represents patients" sensation and feelings, disabilities, discomforts, attitudes and the effects of symptoms on activities and relationships. Patients may have a disease but not illness or an illness and no disease (ex. Diabetic patients do not experience illness; dementia, depression people experience it but not necessarily viewed as a disease) (slide 10) Factors which influence illness and disease: personal factors, age, socio-economic factors, community factors, government factors, environmental factors.
