After hilter got power in germany, in the 30s, stalin was trying to make diplomatic friendships with the western allies and powers. They were not eager to sign any mutual de nes treaties with the soviets. Munich crisis in 1938 was the nal blow. He wanted the sudetenland as natural german territory. And emergency international conference was held in germany to nd some kind of accord to prevent war. Czech and the soviet union was not invited. Agreed to let germany have it, as long as they would ask for nothing more. Britain thought that they had bough peace. For stalin this was the sign that the western powers were not interested in containing hitlers expansions. They would have to nd their own solution to prevent invasion by nazi germany. Munich crisis is cited extensively in history lessons. Stalin stated playing diplomacy on both sides.
