People thought after overthrowing communist regimes and applying western policies, they would gain immediate prosperity. He was installed to try and resuscitate the system but for the most part, he failed. You didn"t need to have an antagonism between communism and capitalism. His 1988 statement renounced the brezhnev doctrine. He didn"t send tanks to restore control to other communist governments in eastern europe. Various reforms had translated to dissidence: hungary opens its border, poland: solidarity"s triumph, fall of the berlin wall: this marked a major turning point. Groups were no longer afraid to challenge communist regimes. In a process of months, one by one, communists controlled areas fell. The dissolution of the soviet union 1991. It was relatively peaceful, a movement towards the western. The results were: purging the communists, the trial and execution of ceausescu, removal of high government officials, no need for social revolution, constitutional reform: parliamentary systems and basic civil rights.
