Mysterious death 1953: strong evidence that he was poisoned. Led to a succession struggle: the troika = beria, malkenkov and krushchev, krushchev turned people against beria = execution of. Beria 1953: malenkov"s new job, transformation of communist system, he no longer used fear to control people, he planned to liberalize communism. He promised the end of the terror: freed political prisoners. Delegates of communism would come together and discuss then the leader would make a speech. As a result, the party started having questions about his leadership. During the cuban missile crisis, he had retreated.
