Definition: an individual who provides unpaid care to family members and friends with physical, cognitive, or mental health conditions. Legal definition: the person with the power of attorney for personal care is considered the primary caregiver by law. Self identification as a caregiver- a part of the process. Struggling to juggle(they have more than one role) In it for the long haul (on average care for 8 years) A social determinant of health ( caregiving is a social determinant of health: healthy eating, exercising etc) "constant vigilance" or always on call" (always thinking about it) Context makes a difference -timing of care, proximity, effort, response. It has economic value of over billion canadian dollars per year for all caregivers. It more than the dyad one on one (more people are invested in the caregiving time, more than just a family affair)
