GEO 2163 Lecture Notes - Lecture 9: Lab Report, Corundum, Magnetite
Document Summary
Halite: this sample had a greasy luster and was colourless. Its hardness was relatively soft, it could be easily scratched by a copper penny. We determined it was halite due to its salty taste. Sylvite: a colourless mineral with very similar characteristic properties as halite, however this sample was much bitterer than halite. Its hardness was very soft; it could be easily scratched by the fingernail. Fluorite: this sample had perfect cleavage in 4 directions forming octahedrons with a vitreous luster and a transparent to translucent nature. This sample left no/white streak on a porcelain plate. We observed some twinning on this sample which with the hardness roughly around a copper penny, we determined it was fluorite. Hematite: this metallic sample was much denser than the previous samples we observed with a hardness level capable of scratching the glass plate.
