Document Summary
Geosphere: dense, primarily solid part of the earth that consists of rock and overlying sediment. The earth is a moving solid (it is static) Antarctica and greenland are great examples of the cryosphere. Glacier deposits have advanced and retreated and scratch the bedrock and deposit sediments. Specific rock formations that are dated tend to match w/ certain continents. Land bridges--> narrow strip of low density, feisic rock that crossed oceans: allow for the migration of animals. Magnetometers: metal detectors used to locate enemy subs (masses of ferromagnetic material creates Was able to see the seafloor data through sonar data. Age of basal sediments also increases as you move away from the mid oceanic ridge. All earthquakes are present in the lithosphere. Plates are bigger than continents or a specific ocean basin. Plates are gen by volcanism at mid oceanic ridges: aka spreading ridges, plates move about 1-10 cm per year.
