Globalization and health: example: nafta and mexico"s corn crisis. Any economic shift will create bene ts and problems for different individuals. Opened up mexican markets to us corns (trade barriers are gone), competition. Problem: us subsidizes corn hugely, guaranteed value (farmer"s are safe) Cheap us corn being sold in mexican markets (mexico corn is expensive), lost jobs, restructuring of industry (small farms were bought by large corporations) Opposite: vs. workers and cars to mexico (switch-up). Huge change in economies in result of this free-market agreement: example: us seeking to stop canada plans for food warning labels in nafta negotiations. Nafta now known as canada-united states-mexico agreement (cusma). Warning labels used to help consumers make informed choices about products (i. e. cigarettes). Existing labels: nutrition labels which are dif cult to interpret, front of packaging labels currently only positive". Proposal by healthcare to introduce more meaningful labels. Wanted to identify fats, sugars and sodium on the front of packaging.
