GEG 3102 Lecture Notes - Lecture 7: Flow Velocity, Wetted Perimeter, Pressure Sensor
Document Summary
Limnimetry: the level of surface gravitational water (m) Measurement: stage gauge (basically a ruler), float gauge (water flows into the gauge and raises/lowers a float), pressure sensor (determines the water pressure which can be converted to depth [keep air pressure in mind]) Pressure sensor: must also record the air pressure. Flow: velocity at which water is flowing (m/s) Discharge: volume of water passing through a section of a river (m3/s [cumecs]) Volumetric method: working with very small volumes and discharges. Use a container and a stopwatch to measure flow. Can measure very small creeks, but can be time consuming. Velocity-area method: calculate the velocity and area for each sector of the creek to find the discharge, then add them up. Has to be done on site, can be time consuming. Maximum velocity occurs at the surface, and minimum along the bed.
