Question: what are the foundations of a fair and honourable relationship between aboriginal and non-aboriginal people of canada? . 178 days of hearings, 3500 witnesses, 96 communities. 5 volume report, 5000 pages, 440 recommendation, million over 5 years. Much of trc was based on this commission. Most people had no idea that this commission was even taken place even though they were being taxed for it. Aboriginal and non-aboriginal people do not know each other. Native studies only began at universities in the 1980s. Conclusion: main policy direction, pursued for more than 150 years, has been wrong . Refers to the assimilation of native americans, residential schools. Stated that this relationship was fixable, but only if we enter in a relationship together. Instead of having govt decide, their would be a partnership about what to do going forward.
