Interest in the experiences of migration & outcomes for the migration population. New emerging issues: globalization of migration, diversity of migrant flows. New questions about who moves & why people migrate. Illegal migration and trafficking: gender & migration. Migration is an important ingredient in the processes of globalization (this is not new: ee (cid:858)so(cid:272)ial glo(cid:271)alizatio(cid:374)(cid:859) Migration is also a symptom of relations of dependence between different regions at different times: uneven development, global divisions of labour. Mobility ability to move (permanently or temporarily: broad term describes wide array of human movement, usually implies short-distance. Migration long distance move to a new location: emigration (out-migration) Millions of africans were abducted or sold into slavery & transported to work in the mines & plantations of the caribbean and north and south america. Contract to work for an employer for a specific period of time. No pay, or little pay, in exchange of accommodation, food, essentials, and passage to a new country.
