In 1950, 2/3 of people lived in rural areas. Today, half of the world"s population lives in cities. Rural to urban migration has been one of the most important population trends in the last 50-60 years. Facilitated by declining demand for labour in rural areas, increases in population and urban demand for labour. Urbanization strongly associated with decline in number of children per family. See this reflected in fact that humanities doubling is slowing. Children are no longer an asset on farms. There are now 500 cities with a population is a million or more people. All the people living in cities continue to eliminate waste of all kinds, emit carbon dioxide, require food, fuel, living space and multiple services. Big problem is that most of the worlds cities have had a relatively short amount of time to adjust and provide services commonly associated with cities in the west.
