Incorporates the physical environment, population and characteristics of the state. 1300s - 1800s: states were formed and fragmented because of population, composition of population, agriculture, resources, land area and the role of cities. Taking up ideas by darwin about the natural world and translating those ideas into politics. Grows and contracts due to external factors like resources and population size. This has nothing to do with power or economics, just how population effects the nation. Fredrich ratzel: the state is a biological organism and the growth of states is not a function of power but is natural. Focus on the study of power and place/space.
