Sexual violence: broad term that describes any violence, physical, psychological, carried out through sexual means or by targeting sexuality. The violence takes different forms including sexual abuse, rape, incest, childhood sexual abuse and rape during armed conflict. Victim blaming: when a victim is blamed for their assault (ex: a woman is blamed because of how she is dressed) Rape culture is a concept that links rape and sexual violence to the culture of a society, and in which dominant attitudes and practices normalize, excuse, tolerate and even condone rape. Rape culture coincides with other -phobias and -isms . We must be careful with our language, such as i raped that exam, which might normalize this problematic language. 1/3+ of women have experienced some form of sexual assault in their lifetime. 15% of female university students in canada experience sexual assault. Fewer than 10% of sexually assaulted students report the crime to the police.
