Critical disability studies scholarship and activism in recent decades has created different models for analyzing disability and ableism: medical model. Gives almost exclusive authority to medical professionals (doctors, scientists, nurses, etc) Seen as holding the answers as opposed to people with disabilities. Created by disability scholars, activists, and people with disabilities to challenge the medical model. Society built to favour and give access to able-bodied individuals and devalues anyone who is outside. Makes a distinction between disability and impairment. Disability is caused by the impairment in the context that the person lives. Disabilities that lies at the intersection of disability and environment of people living with disabilities. Our environments and societies create disabilities and devalue alternative modes of being in the world. Many argue that the two models are too binary.
