FEM 2107 Lecture 3: WEEK THREE PART 2- audre lorde reading notes
Document Summary
Age, race sex and class: women redefining difference . Audre lorde: she is an intersectional person: 49, lesbian, black, feminist, mother, and in an interracial relationship. Black and third world people have to educate whites about their humanity (tell them theyre human too): women are expected to educate men, gays are expected to educate straights. Instead of using energy for change we have to educate the social norm about us while they maintain their positions. In a profit economy institutionalized rejection of difference is necessary: we are taught to respond to difference with fear and loathing. Separation comes from: failure to recognize our differences failure to examine the distortions that come from misnaming them: and failure to examine the effects they have on human behavior and expectation. Racism: the belief in inherent superiority of one race over all others and thereby gives them the right of dominance.
