FEM 1100 Lecture Notes - Lecture 1: Cunt, Bell Hooks, Gloria Steinem
Document Summary
We act depending on our society (family, nation, race) Social constructions feminine/masculine = not a definitive thing. Katz: working with guys to prevent violence against women + children. 86% armed robberies = men (these stats rarely come up in discussions regarding these issues. Gender neutral pronouns always used in respects to men"s crimes) Women also suffer from all the leading factors to violence in men yet they don"t commit. We hear about how to help women enduring violence but not how to prevent. When women/people of race commit violence it becomes a crazy news story/issue. Focus on gene"s/gender differences/biological = men"s violence is programmed/boys will be boys/apparently something bound to happen. Environmental factors are not taken into consideration yet it is a taught behaviour. Shifting focussed from learned to taught (guys: act tough, aggressive, no emotion + outside of this = gay/sissy) Rape scenes (women) are always a way to prove another point (generally about a man)
