Review: explain the significance of marilyn frye"s birdcage metaphor, as discussed in class. To explain the systemic nature of oppression, if you"re too focused on one bar of the birdcage you cannot see the whole problem. Explain the systemic nature of oppression using a specific example to illustrate your answer. Systemic means a bunch of things working together towards the same goal. Bechdel test does not tell us anything about the quality of the film whether its sexists or racist, it tells us that when you look at the larger picture the vast majority of films are male centered. Harmless joke that applies to everyone, jokes are dangerous when they center a certain group, depends on context. Is the joke problematizing a problem or promoting a problem. Says that gay men aren"t manly and therefore are weak. Lumps gays and women together in a category that is lesser than men.
