ENV 1101 Lecture Notes - Lecture 3: Chemosynthesis, Atmospheric Pressure, Positive Feedback
Document Summary
Lecture 3: how the world works ecosystems. Ecosystems are complex but they"re not chaotic necessarily. Changes every where and at any level will affect us. A biotic group reproduces and perpetuates itself. Animals, plants, microbes these are biotic communities. The abiotic components can perpetuate themselves as well (ex rocks) but biota reproduce on much shorter time scales. Resources are part of the abiotic realm they are consumed by biotic components. The material from which living and formally living things are made. An important distinction is that organic matter has carbon and in the context of this class, organic just means it has carbon. Usually includes carbon (c) and hydrogen (h) atoms. May include other elements such as nitrogen (n), oxygen (o), sulfur (s) or phosphorus (p) These are compounds of mineral (rather than biological) origin. When water and carbon dioxide mix they make carbonic acid (h2co3) which is not organic even tho it has carbon in it.
