Tried to be faithful to the book in every way. About 85+% of the book makes it on to the screen. Early movie in 1931 had spade as quite a womanizer. Wanted to bring the detective overlay to find a deeper view into human psychology. Things are more confused in terms of defining truth and justice. Challenge to use the camera in novel ways, because much of the novel is just conversation. Huston was very careful to use cues from the book to orient the camera. Spade may have had a small relationship with liza - but we can see a small snarl that insinuates his relationship with liza. Huston is good about balancing first and third person camera perspectives. Everyone is wary of spade - they don"t know what side he"s on. Very stark in differentiating dark and light. Expressionism - expresses meaning through context and style. Limited power available - film studios had limited power.
