Shifts
Stay consistent in:
1. Point of view
2. Verb tense (e.g. past vs. present)
3. Voice (passive vs. active)
Point of view:
• Stay consistent in person:
o I vs. you vs. he/she/one
• Stay consistent in number:
o singular vs. plural
E.g.
All students will need your student cards to write his/her exams.
Inconsistency in:
• number (shifts between singular and plural)
• person (shifts between second and third person)
Verb tense (I.e. past, present, future)
E.g.
I was so angry with her, and yet there she is, giving me a big, fake smile!
Fix: I was so angry with her, and yet there she was, giving me a big, fake smile!
Voice
E.g.
I have fixed (active) the dishwasher, but repairs are also needed (passive) on the stove.
Fix: I have fixed the dishwasher, but I also need to repair the stove.
