ENG 1120 Lecture Notes - Lecture 5: Love Marriage, Op-Ed, Dowry
Document Summary
Lecture 5 - op-ed - arrange v. s. love marriage: which one will survive. In arranged marriages the divorce rates are much lower4% Since these relationships are chosen by family members, it seems that they are built on a set of moral values and beliefs. A certain level of equality is achieved in these unions. e. g. education, finances, world view, etc. Since families do matching, they tend to go for partners who are equal stature. E. g. if you have a highly educated daughter you aren"t going to marry her to someone who didn"t even finish high school. This starts the relationship on equal footing and things can build from there. If you already know you"ve got your husband or wife in your bag (so to speak) it frees you to be who you truly are. There aren"t any games because you don"t need them. Love can exist in arranged marriages even though it builds over time.
