So a literal problem of possible madness (due to overly morbid sensitivity, or due to inbreeding) connects quite easily to a symbolic exploration of psychological problems . Roderick and madeleine are twins a male half and a female half. That"s an idea that"s explored in psychology, along with the ideas of different sides of the brain and their functions. Bury his female half ? (and then the punishment of the return of the repressed) Think about the time period in which this story was written.
