You are not developing a thesis about whether or not you like the ad, or whether you think it will work. Your focus is on how the advertisement attempts to persuade its target audience. You are less interested in what the advertisement is saying than in how it is saying it. Your task is to break down and analyse the strategies of manipulation being used. An in-class demonstration of this assignment will take place before it is due. Make sure you are in class on that day. In theory, you can choose any kind of advertisement (e. g. , television, magazine, bench, advertisements on cars, internet ads). You must, though, be able to provide a copy of each advertisement you use and hand it in with your essay. If you choose tv advertisements, for example, you will need to be able to show your instructor exactly what you watched. This means that magazine advertisements are easiest because you can simply clip them.
