Passive voice: stresses the receiver of an action (used in science describing an experiment, or any situation where whoever performed the action is unimportant or unknown) Ex: the catalyst was placed in the solution. This is a passive voice because the doer of the action whoever it was that did the placing is unmentioned. Active voice: stresses the performer of an action. Ex: dr. hepcat placed the catalyst in the solution. Adverbs: modify verbs, adjectives, other adverbs, and sometimes whole unites of a sentence. Ex: he climbed quickly but she climbed very slowly. Prepositions: indicate the position (in time or space) of nouns and pronouns. Ex: she dumped the beer on his head. Ex: his home is near a second cup. Linking/connecting words and phrases (and, but, for, nor, so, yet, or) Can join words, phrases, and main clauses. Ex: jack and jill went up the hill.
