The ability to find the right tone, depending on context, is usually called tact . An essayist uses the tactful tone of someone who assumes: the readers intelligence, the readers desire to be informed and intellectually challenged (without being confused, the reader"s appreciation for a balanced argument. Formal diction: means that the choice of words and phrases is standard english. *avoid the first and second person (i am not supposed to be talking to you) *rely on objective fact rather than personal feelings: Feelings do not inform the final copy of academic essays.
