Basic components of the sentence: subject and predicate. The sentence is the basic unit of written (though not of spoken) communication. You need to be able to identify incomplete sentences in your writing so you can make them complete in formal writing. A subject: answers the reader"s question what or who is this about? the main part of the subject is a noun or pronoun. A predicate: tells the reader something the subject is doing or what is being observed about it. The main part of the predicate is a verb. A sentence is a group of words that contains at least one subject and one predicate and needs nothing else to complete its thought. Dirty, dangerous dogs | bark balefully behind the barn. The end of our troubles | is in sight. Recognizing clauses: a clause is a group of words that contains a subject and a predicate.
