Senate and people governed rome: seems like democracy but is really an aristocratic government, those in the senate (aristocrats) had more money + power. Two consuls which were appointed on a yearly term so that no single person had too much power. Orientally citizen soldiers (needed to meet a certain ownership requirements in terms of land) Large pool of manpower (due to the roman expansion) Professionalization in the 1st century bc: professional soldiers owed their loyalty to the general that payed him, not the senate. Result : civil wars: sulla v. marius, caesar v pompey, octavian v mark anthony. Brutal discipline: beatings, executions, physically/mentally grueling. Hard training: constantly working maintains the identities of soldiers keeps morals high. The romans would set up camp when heading to a battle. They would dig a ditch around the site for security. The tents were precisely placed in rows (discipline) The next day, they would take everything down and keep on marching.
