You fight for personal glory -> the person who kills the most people is the best warrior (individual glory) Fighting is typically one on one (face to face) Everybody is trying to outdo each other for precedence (this is why the greeks created the olympic games) Spartans are not concerned with material objects, they are militaristic: conquest of territory.
