The society union come to an end to to a lack of technology. Deterrence: you attack me, i attack you therefore, no one wanted to attack - fear of mutual distraction. Collective security: more than one country formed stable alliances. Ended with the collapse of the soviet union. Only one standing belief: fear of nuclear destruction. Good for un peace keeping - they could help without being accused of interfering.
