Some human beings enjoy a wide range of opportunities and choices with respect to the way they live their lives while others follow a pattern of survival over which they exercise little control. Development studies aims to explain both diversity evident in the world in relation to human well being and the common patterns that emerge when comparing people, social groups, nations and economic/political systems, and regions of the world. Critical theorists have pointed out that labelling plays at least 2 important roles: labels make existing practices appear legitimate, and they also shape future policy making.
