Transnational flow : process of interaction and integration between people, companies, governments of different nations a process driven by international investment, trade and information and technology, flow of people, money, goods, services. Boundaries of region, nation-states, cultures blurred/loosened: boarders are blurred or loosened, citizenship. Movement of capital, production, finance, trade, ideas, images, people, organizations: proponents of globalization argue that it allows poor countries to develop economically raise their standards of living, modern-day colonialism. Novel assemblages of punishment : punishment itself is instrumental and expressive, strong, punitive laws: three strikes, mandatory minimums, disintegrative shaming, retribution. Defending luxury lifestyles: public/private police, architecturally. Citizens as consumers included/reward based on image. Permanent category of people marginal to economy: can"t compete in legitimate ways. Degree of mobility determines status: bowman: welcomed tourists, and vagabonds. People who invest in the local economy. People who are slowly eroding the economic and social fabric.
