CRM 2303 Lecture Notes - Lecture 6: Sample Size Determination, Observational Error, Sampling Error
Document Summary
Sampling: a subset or smaller group of people, places, or things taken from a larger group, it"s often not possible or necessary to interview the whole population, e. g. Study a sample of several thousand canadians to find out the rate of crime victimization among all canadians: the purpose of your study will determine your sampling procedures, a good sampling frame is needed to have unbiased data. Sampling units/elements: elements of the population that are chosen to be included in the sample, individuals, households, newspaper articles, prisons, etc. Universe: the broad group to whom we want to generalize, judges, canadians, undergraduate students. Target population: population specified in concrete terms, e. g. Sampling frame: a complete list of all sampling elements in the target population, list of valid phone numbers, registered voters, program participants, email addresses, municipalities, or neighbourhoods, vary in terms of accuracy.
