Total Institutions
• Erving Goffman

Question:
• What are the different aspects of a person’s life?
- In school
- Work
- Social life
- Family
- Hobbies, pastimes
- Romantic life
• Where does one engage in each?
- Friends who you work with and friends in your social life
- Sometimes when the two collide, it can be a bit weird
• Who are the people involved in each aspect?
Total Institutions
Definition:
A place of residence and work where a large number of like-situated individuals, cut off from the
wider society for an appreciable period of time, together lead an enclosed, formally administered
round of life.
- They are dealing with groups of people who have lost their identity
- Total institutions are usually seen as negative
- Sense of dignity can be lost
- Once they are there, they might not be able to leave when they want
- Can be physically barred from leaving something else that won’t allow you to leave
